The Emperor's Railroad - Guy Haley (english version)

I'm really enjoying most of the novellas that are being published by Tor, they are presenting a mix of many genres and many authors, some known and consolidated, others less. A great diversity to choose from.

Talking about diversity, the novella that I present today, The emperor's railroad, by Guy Haley, is a  strange mixture of zombies, angels, knights and dragons in a post-apocalyptic scenario in which human society has regressed to levels we can descrive almost as medieval.

The synopsis piqued my interest, especially to see if the author should be able to link all these aspects in a more or less coherent and interesting plot. I think he has been successful, but with nuances.

The story is told through the point of view of a boy of 12, who explains the story when he is older and, having spent his life as a monk, is about to die (no, it's not called Adso ). The plot centers on the trip he and his mother undertake to the house of a cousin, after his village has been overrun by zombies. On the way they find the true protagonist, Quinn, a knight, who is hired to accompany and protect them on their journey.

In the world  Haley propose us, major cities are run by angels, that appoint the knights as their representatives. We don't know much about the causes that have led to the emergence of zombies nor angels, nor the decline of our civilization, but we know that relatively recently, some cities have entered a civil war and the people are yet sufferint the consequences of the conflict.

Although I am no a zombie genre fan, I think the novel is exciting; there is a scene that tells an attack of this kind of monsters that has provoked me goosebumps. It may be the semi-medieval setting. It's not the same facing a hungry horde with machine gun bursts than with pikes.

Altough it is original in some points, the plot and the characters have some topics. But the main mistake I find in the story and  that bothers me more is that does not solve many of the puzzles posed in the worldbuilding, and finally we don't know what had happened to our world. It is, so far, all open to interpretation. I have some assumptions and suspicions about has happened, but I will have to wait for subsequent installments of the adventures of Quinn to corroborate them. I do not know if this strategy is good or not, frankly, I think it might discourage more than one lector, but  I'm intrigued enough to give a second chance to Guy Haley. In July a new novella will be published with Quinn as the main chracter, The Ghoul King. Surely it will appear here.

La apuesta que está realizando la editorial Tor por la novela breve es muy interesante, creo que ya lo he comentado alguna vez. Estoy disfrutando mucho de la mayoría de las lecturas que están publicando en este formato, con una mezcla de muchos géneros y muchos autores, algunos conocidos y consolidados, otros menos. Hay mucho donde elegir.

Aunque si hablamos de mezclas, la que se lleva la palma es la novela breve que os presento hoy, The emperor's railroad, de Guy Haley. Es un potaje extrañísimo de zombis, ángeles, caballeros y dragones en un escenario post-apocalíptico en el que la sociedad humana ha retrocedido a niveles de la edad media.

La sinopsis despertó mi interés, sobre todo para ver cómo enlazaba todos estos aspectos en una narración más o menos coherente y interesante. Creo que ha tenido éxito, aunque con matices.

La historia está narrada a través del punto de vista de un joven de 12 años, que nos explica la historia cuando es ya mayor y, después de haber pasado toda su vida como monje, está a punto de morir ( no, no se llama Adso). La trama se centra en el viaje que él y su madre emprenden hacia la casa de un familiar, después de que su aldea haya sido arrasada por los zombis. En el camino encuentran a Quinn, el verdadero protagonista, un caballero, a quien contratarán para que les acompañe y proteja en su viaje.

En el mundo que nos propone Haley las ciudades  más importantes están regentadas por ángeles, que nombran como representantes-intermediarios a estos caballeros. No nos explica gran cosa de las causas que han provocado la aparición de los zombis ni de los ángeles, ni el declive de nuestra civilización, pero sí sabemos que hace relativamente poco tiempo algunas ciudades han entrado en una guerra civil y todavía se sufren las consecuencias del conflicto.

Aunque no soy nada aficionado al género zombi, creo que la novela es emocionante; hay una escena que narra un ataque de este tipo de monstruos que me ha dejado los pelos como escarpias. Puede que sea la ambientación semi-medieval. No es lo mismo enfrentarse a una horda hambrienta a base de ráfaga de ametralladora que a base de golpe de pica. 

La trama y los personajes presentan algunos tópicos que son los que hacen que no acabe de valorarla con notable alto, pero el principal pero que le pongo a la historia es que me molesta que me deje con la intriga y no solucione muchos de los enigmas que plantea en el worldbuilding. Está, de momento, todo abierto a interpretaciones. Tengo algunas hipótesis y sospechas sobre los que ha sucedido en nuestro planeta, pero me tendré que esperar a posteriores entregas de las aventuras de Quinn para corroborarlas. No sé si esta estrategia es buena o no, francamente, creo que puede desanimar a más de un lecotr, pero de momento yo estoy lo suficientemente intrigado para darle a Guy Haley una segunda oportunidad. En julio está prevista una nueva novela breve con Quinn como protagonista, The Ghoul King. Seguramente aparecerá por aquí.
