Medusa's Web - Tim Powers (english version)

Although I'm an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy I have many gaps in the classics of this genre. I can't avoid reading new books, as you know those who follow the blog regularly. I have come to wonder if a new section of classics in the blog will compel myself to discover renowned authors of which I haven't read nothing yet.

Tim Powers, author, among other successful novels of The Anubis Gates, is in this category.
Following the dynamic that characterizes my reading list, before reading his most famous and recognized works I've chosen a novelty, Medusas's Web, to be published shortly. I think my decision has not been entirely successful.

The story is a strange mixture of time travel, thriller and horror novels relationated with haunted houses. After the suicide of her aunt in mysterious circumstances, two brothers are called to her mansion in Hollywood to fulfill her last wish: to spend a week there as they used to when they were kids. In the mansion they will meet with their cousins, with whom there is not very good relation.
Much of the family is addicted to spiders, geometric representations that when are looked allow time travel so that the traveller gets into the skin of other people. On the same trip you visit both the past and the future in a very ingenious but quite complex system. The two brothers will have to solve some mysteries from the past to try to survive in the present.

I liked the author's style, especially the relationships between the characters and the dialogues established between them, with irony and black humor, and with a funny touch of  resignation in front of  all the fantastic events they must face. I also liked the surreal tone that permeates the novel and the fact that Powers doesn't put things easy for the reader; the plot has some difficult moments that generate intrigue and tension.

The problem is that, from the middle of the book more or less, once you are used to the system of time travel, the plot loses interest. It is too irregular, with interesting high points, but with long boring fragments. With fewer pages I'm sure it would have been a better book.

In short: a novel with an engaging style and a very interesting and original premise about time travel, but with a plot that ends up losing interest, probably because it's too long,  and with some repetitions in the plot.
It will not be the last thing I read of this author, for sure, but this novel hasn't convinced me completely.

Aunque sea un lector empedernido de ciencia ficción y fantasía tengo muchas lagunas en lo que a los clásicos de este género se refiere. Y es que me pueden las novedades, como sabréis los que seguís el blog habitualmente. He llegado a plantearme una sección de clásicos en el blog para "obligarme" a leer algunas de las novelas que tengo pendientes y descubrir a autores reconocidos y de los que no he leído nada todavía.

En esta categoria está Tim Powers, autor, entre otras novelas de éxito, de Las puertas de Anubis, que me han recomendado desde diversas fuentes muy encarecidamente.

Siguiendo la dinámica que caracteriza mis lecturas, antes de leer sus obras más famosas y reconocidas me he acabado decantando por una novedad, Medusas's Web, que se publicará en breve. Creo que mi decisión no ha sido acertada del todo.

La historia es una extraña mezcla de viajes en el tiempo, novela policíaca y novela sobre casas encantadas. Después del suicidio de su tía en extrañas circunstancias, dos hermanos son convocados a su mansión de Hollywood para cumplir su última voluntad: que pasen una semana allí como cuando eran pequeños. En la mansión se reunirán con sus primos, con los que no hay muy buena relación. 
Gran parte de la família es adicta a las arañas, representaciones geométricas que cuando las miras permiten realizar viajes en el tiempo y ponerte en la piel de otras personas. En el mismo viaje visitas tanto el pasado como el futuro, en un sistema muy ingenioso pero bastante complejo y que me ha costado asimilar pero que acaba encajando al final.  Los dos hermanos tendrán que solucionar algunos misterios del pasado para intentar sobrevivir en el presente.

El estilo del autor me ha gustado, sobre todo las relaciones entre los personajes y los diálogos que establecen, con mucho humor negro y ironía, y con un cierto aire de resignación ante todos los fenómenos fantásticos muy divertido. También me ha gustado el tono surrealista que impregna la novela y el hecho que no ponga las cosas fáciles al lector; la trama tiene algunos momentos complejos y que generan intriga y tensión.  

El problema es que, a partir de la mitad del libro mas o menos, una vez familiarizado con el sistema del viaje en el tiempo, estos momentos empiezan a escasear y, lamentablemente, la trama se desinfla y acaba perdiendo interés. Es demasiado irregular, con momentos álgidos muy interesantes, pero con largos fragmentos aburridos. Con menos páginas estoy seguro que mejoraría.

En resumen: una novela con un estilo atractivo y una premisa muy interesante y original sobre los viajes en el tiempo, pero con una trama que acaba perdiendo interés, seguramente por un exceso de páginas y una cierta repetición. No será lo último que lea del autor, eso seguro.
