The stars are legion - Kameon Hurley (english review)

This is going to be one of the novels we're going to talk about more this year, I think nobody will remain indifferent, and opinions will be extreme in both directions.

The Stars are legion is a space-opera with many original and surprising aspects,  and that mixes very diverse situations to create a rich history, with a lot of details, several unexpected plot twists and a very good structure.

One of the highlights is the world-building. The Legion is a set of artificial organic worlds that are in decline. The surface of the worlds is not inhabited, but its interior is, and various inbred clans are struggling to conquer the maximum of worlds to be able to obtain the scarce resources that exist. The appearance of a new planet that comes from the inner part of the system will provoke the struggle between the two predominant clans.

The organic functioning of the interior of the worlds is very original (recycling, conduits with peristalsis, the openings between rooms...) as well as the technology needed to be able to travel between them.

The story is told in  first person, and from the point of view of two very different characters. Zan is an unreliable narrator, because she has lost her memory, and we accompany her in the process of discovering the world in which she has awakened. Jayd also belongs to this world, but the matriarch of the clan has offered her as a wife to the leader of the rival clan to try to establish a truce. From the beginning it becomes clear that the two characters have had a love story and have a hidden plan, which we will discover as we advance inside the plot.

Although basically a science fiction story, a very important part of the plot takes place on a journey through the interior of one of the worlds, and at that time acquires characteristics of a fantasy story. This part has at times reminded me of John Varley's Titan. Placing this kind of scenario in a space-opera context is risky, and it doesn't work well always.

The aspect that I think is going to cause controversy is that in this imaginary universe there are only women. All characters are female. It is an original point, and more bearing in mind that these women often become pregnant. I had a problem with this; leaving aside the reproductive issue, I had a hard time imagining a couple of the main characters as a woman. Her attitude, reactions, expressions, relationships with other characters ... when I realized I was imagining them as a man. It is not a problem of the story, but mine, but it is an aspect that has influenced in my final valoration.

The aspects that have not convinced me of the novel are very personal, and therefore I recommend you reading it without doubts, for its originality, for the spectacular world-building, and for the display of imagination.

Esta va a ser una de las novelas de las que más se va a hablar este año, no creo que deje a nadie indiferente, y las opiniones van a ser extremas en ambos sentidos. 

Las estrellas son legión es una space-opera con muchos aspectos originales y sorprendentes, cosa que a estas alturas de la película es todo un mérito, y que mezcla situaciones muy diversas para crear una historia rica, con muchos matices, con varios giros inesperados y muy bien estructurada.

Uno de los aspectos más destacables es la ambientación. La Legión es un conjunto de mundos artificiales, casi orgánicos, que están en decadencia. La superficie de los mundos no está habitada, pero si su interior, y diversos clanes endogámicos están en lucha para conquistar el máximo de mundos para poder obtener los escasos recursos que existen. La aparición de un nuevo planeta que proviene de la parte interior del sistema provocará la lucha entre los dos clanes predominantes.

El funcionamiento orgánico del interior de los mundos es muy original (el reciclaje, los conductos con peristaltismo, las oberturas entre espacios...) así como la tecnología necesaria para poder viajar entre ellos.

La historia está narrada en primera persona, y desde el punto de vista de dos personajes muy diferentes. Zan es una narradora no fiable, pues ha perdido la memoria, y la acompañamos en el proceso de descubrir el mundo en el que ha despertado. Jayd también pertenece a este mundo, pero la matriarca del clan la ha ofrecido como esposa a la líder del clan rival para intentar establecer una tregua. Desde el principio se hace evidente que los dos personajes han tenido una historia de amor y que tienen un plan oculto, que iremos descubriendo a medida que avanzamos en la trama.

Aunque básicamente es una historia de ciencia ficción, una parte muy importante de la trama transcurre en un viaje por el interior de uno de los mundos, y en esos momentos adquiere características de una historia de fantasía. Esta parte en algunos momentos me ha recordado a Titán, de John Varley. Situar este tipo de escenario en un contexto de space-opera es arriesgado, y en algunos momentos no me ha acabado de encajar.

El aspecto que creo que va a causar controversia es que en este universo imaginario sólo hay mujeres. Todos los personajes son femeninos. Es un punto original, y más teniendo en cuenta de que estas mujeres a menudo quedan embarazadas. A mi no me ha acabado de funcionar; dejando a un lado la cuestión reproductiva, me ha costado mucho imaginarme a alguna de las protagonistas como mujer. Su actitud, reacciones, expresiones, relaciones con otros personajes...cuando me daba cuenta me la estaba imaginando como un hombre. No es problema de la historia, sino mio, pero es un aspecto que ha influido en que mi valoración no sea más alta.
Los aspectos que no me han acabado de convencer de la novela son muy personales, y por tanto os recomiendo su lectura sin dudas, por su originalidad, por el espectacular world-building, y por el derroche de imaginación.
