The Dark Forest - Liu Cixin (english review)

I just finished the novel that I most expected this year, The Dark Forest, by Liu Cixin, and I have mixed feelings. I'm really happy to see that this great chinese author maintains the style, the grip and the ability to surprise of his previous novel, The three-body problem, and I'm sad because my dose of science fiction in capital letters, for now, it's over . There are few science fiction writers that make my brain spin after reading his stories as Liu Cixin.

I must say that the start of the novel has not convinced me and I was even a little disappointed. It has a very strong oriental touch, too poetic, sometimes disoriented me a bit, I think it's a cultural thing (not to mention names, which as I have already used to, the book is almost finished). The first novel already had these features, but not as pronounced.

But  when the action begins presents incredible scenes, with a great sense of wonder, surprising twists and a very addictive storytelling. The plot focuses more on the part of intrigue and conspiracy that in the scientific part, much more affordable than in the previous novel, but always present and essential in the work of this author. As the usual prodigality of interesting and surprising ideas through storytelling, also typical in the style of Cixin. I especially liked that very few characters repeat from the previous novel, and the main ones are much better defined and characterized that in the first book.

Beware that from this moment there will be spoilers of the first book, so if you have not read it yet (that almost should be considered a sin) I advise not continue reading.

Once humanity knows the threat of Trisolarian fleet, which will arrive in 400 years, and facing the constant monitoring of the Sophons that block scientific progress, there's only one alternative to survival, and is trying to deceive these implacable aliens. To this end four Wallfacers are named: people who have the resources they deem necessary, whose mission will be to imagine a plan to beat the Trisolarians, but the details of their plans can only be known by them, to prevent the sophons to find out. To counteract them, human allies of the Trisolarians create the figure of the Wallbreakers, responsible for finding out and publish each one of the plans. The story is centered on the creation of the four strategies of the Wallfacers through several centuries ( thanks to hibernation some of the protagonists of the XXI Century will have relevance in the XXIII century).

Little more I can say without revealing more of the plot.

It is an absolute must for any lover of science-fiction novels: High level speculation on scientific and social level, scenarios and situations with breathtaking action, political conspiracies, surprising plot twists and an unexpected and totally satisfactory ending , which has left me wanting more. 

In April 2016 the third and final part of the trilogy will be published, Death's End, translated by Ken Liu. The wait will be long...

El bosque oscuro - Liu Cixin

Ya he terminado la novela que más esperaba este año, The Dark Forest, de Liu Cixin, y tengo sensaciones encontradas. Estoy realmente contento de comprobar que este fantástico autor chino mantiene el estilo, la garra y la capacidad de sorprendernos de su novela anterior, The three-body problem, y estoy triste porque mi dosis de ciencia ficción con mayúsculas, de momento, se ha acabado. Y es que pocos autores de ciencia ficción me hacen dar tantas vueltas a sus tramas después de la lectura que Liu Cixin.

Debo decir que a  la trama le cuesta arrancar, el principio no me ha convencido del todo y incluso estaba un poco decepcionado. Tiene  un toque oriental muy marcado, demasiado poético, que a veces me desconcierta un poco. Creo que es una cuestión cultural (por no hablar de los nombres, a los que cuando ya me he acostumbrado, el libro casi se ha acabado). La primera novela ya tenía estas características, pero no tan marcadas.

Eso sí, cuando arranca nos presenta unas escenas increíbles, con un gran sense of wonder, giros sorprendentes y una narración muy adictiva. La trama se centra más en la parte de intriga y conspiración que en la parte científica, mucho más asequible que en la novela anterior, aunque siempre presente y imprescindible en la obra de este autor. Tampoco falta el usual desparrame de ideas interesantes y sorprendentes a través de la narración, también típicas del estilo de Cixin. Me ha gustado especialmente que repite muy pocos personajes, y que estos están mucho mejor definidos y caracterizados que en el primer libro, donde los personajes masculinos se confundían. 

Cuidado, que a partir de este momento habrá algún spoiler del primer libro, así que si no lo habéis leído (que casi debería ser considerado un pecado)  os aconsejo no continuar.
Una vez que la humanidad conoce la amenaza de los Trisolarianos, que llegarán en 400 años, y frente a la constante vigilancia de los Sofones, que bloquean los avances científicos, para sobrevivir sólo queda una alternativa, y es intentar engañar a estos implacables alienígenas. Con este objetivo se nombran a cuatro Wallfacers: personas que dispondrán de los recursos que consideren necesarios, cuya misión será imaginar un plan para vencer a los Trisolarianos, del cuál solo ellas pueden conocer los detalles para evitar que éstos se enteren gracias a sus espías. Para contrarestarlos, los humanos aliados de los Trisolarianos crearan la figura de los Wallbreakers, encargada de averiguar y publicar cada uno de los planes. La historia está centrada en la creación de las estrategias de los cuatro Wallfacers a través de varias etapas temporales, ya que gracias a la hibernación algunos de los protagonistas del Siglo XXI tendrán relevancia en el Siglo XXIII.

Poco más puedo decir sin desvelar algo más de la trama. 
Es una novela totalmente imprescindible para cualquier amante de la ciencia ficción: Especulación a nivel científico y social de gran nivel, escenarios y situaciones de acción impresionantes, conspiraciones políticas, giros inesperados en la trama y un final sorprendente y totalmente satisfactorio, que me ha dejado con ganas de más. Lástima del primer tercio, y de que no acaba de perfilar a los personajes importantes, aunque creo que mejora respecto al primer volumen.

En abril de 2016 (que lejos que está...) se publicará la tercera y definitiva parte de la trilogía, Death's End, traducida por Ken Liu. Que larga se hará la espera...
