The fortress at the end of time - Joe M. McDermott (english review)

The main premise of the novel that I present today is very interesting: humanity has expanded through the galaxy thanks to a technology of transport between the stars, the ansible. This technology, in addition to transporting materials, allows people to be transported, but through an instant cloning process, so that at the destination point a clone is created with the personality and memories of the cloned person.

The colonists destined to populate new worlds are only cloned once, but the military who run the space stations of the colonies can be cloned later to different destinations if they merit enough.

This interesting argument is sprinkled with a good atmosphere: the colony is the farthest from the cradle of humanity, with an orbital station almost in ruins and the mission to monitor the possible return of aliens with which humanity has already fought. In addition, the planet on which the station orbits is at the beginning of the process of terraforming, and colonists must fight against high temperatures, lack of water and abundance of sand.

The main protagonist is Ronaldo Aldo, an ensign assigned to this station that tells the story in the form of a confession in which he will try to explain and justify each of his sins.

It is a pity that with such good ingredients the final result is not very good. Although during the progress of the plot there are some scenes and situations that arouse interest, the problem is that the author has not connected them correctly. The role of the different characters in the station is confusing, as well as their relationships and motivations. There have been times when I have not understood why things happen, and in others, I have become bored.

In its favor I will say that the resolution of the plot has seemed to me brilliant and surprising. Having such a good argument and scenario and a correct ending, the main problem lies in the length of the story: I think that what is a novel at times boring and disjointed, polishing some details would have been an excellent novella, even with  merits to be nominated for the big awards.

In short, a pity. Although the novel has not convinced me I will be attentive to what this author publishes, I really liked some of his ideas.

La premisa principal de la novela que os presento hoy es muy interesante: la humanidad se ha expandido por gran parte de la galaxia gracias a una tecnología de transporte entre las estrellas, el ansible. Esta tecnología, además de permitir transportar materiales, permite transportar personas, pero mediante un proceso de clonación instantánea, de forma que en el punto de destino se crea un clon con la personalidad y recuerdos de la persona clonada.

Los colonos destinados a poblar nuevos mundos sólo se clonan una vez, pero los militares que dirigen las estaciones espaciales de las colonias pueden ser clonados hacia destinos diferentes si hacen suficientes méritos. 

Este interesante planteamiento se ve aderezado con una buena ambientación: la colonia más alejada de la cuna de la humanidad, con una estación orbital casi en ruinas y la misión de vigilar el posible retorno de unos alienígenas con los que la humanidad ya ha combatido. Además, el planeta sobre el que orbita la estación está en los inicios del proceso de terraformación, y los colonos deben luchar contra las elevadas temperaturas, la falta de agua y la abundancia de arena.

El protagonista principal es Ronaldo Aldo, un alférez destinado a esta estación que narra la historia en forma de una confesión en la que intentará explicar  y justificar cada uno de sus pecados.

Es una lástima que con tan buenos mimbres el resultado final sea tan flojo. Aunque durante el progreso de la trama hay algunas escenas y situaciones que despiertan interés, el problema es que no las ha acabado de conectar correctamente. El papel de los diferentes personajes en la estación es confuso, así como sus relaciones y motivaciones. Ha habido momentos en que no he entendido porque pasan las cosas, y en otros, directamente me he aburrido. 

A su favor diré que la resolución de la trama me ha parecido brillante y sorprendente. Teniendo tan buen argumento y ambientación y un final tan correcto, el problema principal radica en  la longitud de la historia: creo que lo que es una novela en algunos momentos aburrida y inconexa, puliendo algunos detalles hubiese sido una excelente novela corta, con méritos incluso para estar nominada para los grandes premios.

En fin, una lástima. Aunque la novela no me ha convencido del todo estaré atento a lo que publique este autor, algunas de sus ideas me han gustado mucho.
